  • Why Art?
  • Fostering creativity won't just increase a child's chances of becoming the next Picasso. You're also helping mental, social and emotional development. Creating art may boost young children's ability to analyze and problem-solve in myriad ways, according to Mary Ann F. Kohl, author of Primary Art: It's the Process, Not the Product. As kids manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence. And children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking, which extends well beyond the craft room. Language and confidence talking about art is paramount in this program. Children who are taught to be self expressed speak with confidence and can defend their opinions thus growing into confident adults.
  • The Canco Park Conservancy is organizing a Children's art class in and near Canco Park. Canco Park is the only open green space in the Journal Square section of Jersey City. We have partnered with Mana Contemporary to create an immersive experience for the children to work in a professional environment and explore their creative expression. The Class will be taught by Gabriel Pacheco a professional artist and educator.
  • Students will work individually and in groups to create various works over the course of the program. They will be exposed to art works on display in the hallways, galleries and studios at Mana Contemporary as inspiration. Students will then be given instruction and shown techniques to complete their own art work. Each class will finish with a thoughtful critique by the students themselves. They will learn to use their voice to speak in a group setting expressing how the works impact them and will give positive feedback to their fellow artists. Students will be given tools to help them express themselves both visually and verbally.

  • About Mana Contemporary
  • Founded in 2011, Mana Contemporary is one of the largest and most innovative contemporary art organizations in the United States. Through its integrated architectural design, Mana offers exceptional services, spaces, and programming for the greater creative community. Its rapidly expanding flagship location in Jersey City (a factory campus originally built in the 1920s) will eventually encompass a footprint of more than two million square feet.
  • Mana’s integrated hive structure allows for the exchange of ideas between artists and art world luminaries. Practitioners specializing in a variety of disciplines—including painting, sculpture, photography, dance, film, sound, and performance—work alongside each other in a forward-thinking environment that fosters experimentation, collaboration, and mutual inspiration.
