Canco Park Conservancy Joins Day of the Dead Parade in Riverview Park

Updated: Feb 3, 2019

Canco Park members, volunteers and families pose with our park's butterfly puppet.

Will it fly? or will it fly away to Mexico?... was the question on this windy October day.

The Riverview Park's Farmers Market 7th Annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration took place on Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Riverview Park, Jersey City Heights.

We got a call from members of the River View Neighborhood Association asking if we would like to be in the Day Of The Dead parade representing Canco Park. Our answer was a quick yes before we were told we needed to build a large puppet as is the tradition of the event. OK, some of us went to art school... so how hard can that be? One twelve foot wide butterfly puppet coming right up!

The weeks leading up to the event we met with Santi Cohen the event's creative director to get inspiration and guidance. Santi was thrilled that our park's mascot is the Monarch butterfly. Turns out, the Monarch plays a big role in the classic celebration in Mexico. The migration south for the Monarch coincides with the celebration of Día de los Muertos. The belief is the spirit of the dead return home on the wings of the Monarch butterflies.

Thank you to the RIverview Farmer's Market and the R.N.A. for inviting us. We had such a good time making a puppet and being involved with such a wonderful group of people who love their park and host so many great events. We are looking forward to next year's event... ladybugs anyone?
